No Apple or Avid at NAB-08.

In an interesting move, Apple has pulled out of NAB as reported from various sources and confirmed by Television Broadcast. This move follows Avid’s recent announcement of their non-participation in the annual broadcaster / media / technology expo in Las Vegas.

HDV Grows Up: Sony’s HVR-S270 and HVR-Z7

s270side.gifSony recently unveiled its latest HDV camcorders to the world. This wasn’t just any ordinary product announcement; with the release of these new models, HDV arrived as a true professional video acquisition technology.

Just as MiniDV was a format that evolved into DVCAM and DVCPRO, and eventually DV itself became acceptable for broadcast, and even feature film production, HDV started as a “consumer” version of HD. But it has evolved dramatically in Sony’s latest models.

MacBook Air. Lacking in a few key “areas.”

jobsrdf.jpgI was really hoping for big iPod Touch… a Mac Touch?
But Air is better for Axiotron’s ModBook, as expensive as it is. It’s a true pressure sensitive touch screen, but it lacks multi-touch.

As for the Air? It’s a bit rarefied.
My distance from San Francisco may have kept me out of Jobs’ “reality distortion field” so that I could hear his “amazing” and “unbelievable” but I wasn’t taken in.

There are several few key points where the MacBook Air misses…

Have you voted for TechThoughts yet?

bloggies.gifAs the Bloggies itself says:

Honor. Prestige. Wealth. These are some of the things that a Bloggie won’t bring you. But that won’t stop the Web from voting…

So vote for TechThoughts.org, maybe as “Best-Kept Secret” or “Best New Weblog” or “Best Computer & Technology” or wherever you see fit.

There’s no physical award or big prize, but if advice or information here has helped you, then it costs you nothing to nominate TechThoughts.org for a Bloggie. But it would give us a warm fuzzy feeling.

Thanks!

Panasonic’s 9.5mm Blue-ray burner- wither slot load?

panny95bluray.jpgIn yet another case why slot-load drives which continue to be used by a few laptop manufacturers despite their notable problems– you can’t easily eject a bad disk, you can’t read optical disks from camcorders, you can’t read business card disks, loading and ejecting mechanisms die, yadda, yadda, yadda…

Panasonic takes Blu-ray burning from 12.7mm to the 9.5mm thinness that UMPCs just love…

Macworld Expo 08: let the rumors begin.

psychic.gif As much as I lament the demise of Macworld Expo East in NYC (Boston was just too far for people from the NYC, Phila, DC, Baltimore hub to easily travel to, compared to NYC) the annual January Expo remains and has actually become stronger in recent years with Apple’s expansion into new electronic markets, and growing strength as a computer company (even though they dropped “Computer” from their name.)

Once the holidays pass, the next event geeks like us focus on (aside from CES) is the Macworld Expo. The rumor mills are already abuzz with ultralight laptop, movie rentals, 3g iPhone, and a whole lot more…

New FAA lithium ion battery rules: Jan. 1, 2008.

batt.gifThe FAA has published new rules for transporting your camcorder & other batteries both as carry-on and as checked baggage. If you’re going to be carrying your own batteries on a flight in 2008 and beyond, it behooves you to read the new guidelines and, if necessary, call the manufacturer— because more than 25 grams of lithium content can get your battery confiscated.

i.e. They may take your $500 160 WH Battery and keep it…

Best HDV Camcorder under $10,000?

That’s the question that was posed to Google a few times and readers ended up here at TechThoughts.org.

The answer is easy. But, like the answer to Life The Universe and Everything is also simple (it’s 42) it is the question that is far, far more difficult. Actually, it’s the same question that would be asked in many instances that can provide the quick answer. What’s the best boat? What’s the best car?

Well, what’s the question that answers “What’s the best camcorder?” …
