Will AVCHD go Pro in 2008?

avchd_log.jpgAs an emerging video acquisition format, AVCHD holds the promise of offering stunning full HD images at the same data rate as DV. But thus far, all manufacturers of AVCHD cameras are using reduced bitrate settings to offer more recording time on flash media recorders.

Will 2008 finally change all this?

HD DVD dead. Let’s move on.

jobshd.jpgRemember more than two years ago when Apple CEO, Steve Jobs held the Sony’s HVR-FX1 HDV camcorder up on stage and called it “The year of HD.”

Here we are several years later and, mostly because of the protracted “format war” between HD DVD and Blu-ray, we have been left with almost everyone sitting on the proverbial fence.

The war’s over folks. There’s only one direction to go and it’s been picked for us.  Continue reading “HD DVD dead. Let’s move on.”

ROCK (tech) HARD PLACE. Yea.

bigrock.jpgThe proverbial “between a rock and a hard place” is basically a tough place to be.

I was corresponding with a fellow videographer who works for a government video department. He tried to explain the troubles he faces with regard to new gear purchases. It’s beyond trying to decide between P2 or SxS. It’s beyond tape or flash media. It’s, well, let’s just say it basically covers the last 20 years of video production- every single day.

The Tech-Store is Open.

store2.jpgCan you get a filtered matte box for your camcorder for under $500?
Yes. You can. Two of them in fact.

These are carefully selected items we think can help your productions- including a matte box with two filter holders for just $240.

The link is up in the right corner of the page: Tech-STORE. Check it out!

sonyz7manualv2.pngSony’s new HDV camcorders, promised for February, are indeed shipping and arriving in people’s hands. This is excellent news as these new camcorders elevate HDV and give us HDV-quality video on readily available and cheap compact flash cards.

One of the best ways to find out about every nook and cranny of these camcorders is to actually RTFM. Well, I’ve got that for you… plus a recap of all seven of the camcorder’s on-screen menus…. and more!

Panny take Plasma to 150″ . . . Doing!

panny150.jpgI had opportunity to see Panasonic’s “world’s largest” 103″ plasma screen at the GV Expo… and now I feel like I’d been had. You can’t really claim the 103″ is the “world’s largest” if you, yourself have already tested and are boxing up a 150″ plasma to be shown at CES.

Engadget has a small gallery of photos of the incredibly impressive screen. It could well do with some better anti-glare glass on the front of it…

Have you voted for TechThoughts yet?

bloggies.gifAs the Bloggies itself says:

Honor. Prestige. Wealth. These are some of the things that a Bloggie won’t bring you. But that won’t stop the Web from voting…

So vote for TechThoughts.org, maybe as “Best-Kept Secret” or “Best New Weblog” or “Best Computer & Technology” or wherever you see fit.

There’s no physical award or big prize, but if advice or information here has helped you, then it costs you nothing to nominate TechThoughts.org for a Bloggie. But it would give us a warm fuzzy feeling.

Thanks!

TechThoughts could win. We need your help.
