As I was unable to attend NAB in person, I read the same news as everyone else and there are clearly a few trends that it pays to notice because they will have a dramatic affect on production in the future. Whether or not you want to go this route, the sounds of inevitability are becoming louder.

The test results of Marshall Levy, of Maverick Productions, will answer the following questions: Do you need to spend the extra money to get the absolutely fastest media available? What does the extra money actually buy? What kind of errors will we have by starting and stopping recording to compact flash over 100 times?
These are the questions we answer right now.

Will AVCHD go Pro in 2008?

As an emerging video acquisition format, AVCHD holds the promise of offering stunning full HD images at the same data rate as DV. But thus far, all manufacturers of AVCHD cameras are using reduced bitrate settings to offer more recording time on flash media recorders.

Panasonic announces 32g P2 for $1650. Oh boy.

Panasonic has announced the availability of the 32GB P2 solid-state memory card (model AJ-P2C032RG) for its popular P2 HD and P2 product line.

Available at a suggested list price of $1,650, the reusable 32GB P2 card provides recording time greater than media for most tape-based and disc-based systems.

Thankfully, they also lowered the price of their 16g P2 card to $900. But…

I had an opportunity to photograph the menus on a working HVR-S270U (preliminary US model). I’ve exported these as a movie so you can go through each frame, back and forth, and reference different menus.

Today, we’ll look at the OTHERS menu and the various settings users will have access to on these new camcorders. The HVR-S270U and the HVR-Z7U are very, very similar camcorders so almost all of the menus will be identical.

Sony HVR-S270 & HVR-Z7U lens operation

Here’s a close up of the lens on the new HVR-S270 and HVR-Z7U. You can see how the focus pops in and out of auto focus (IMHO somewhat more cumbersome than a single small button, but this way, your fingers never leave the focus ring).

The focus ring features distance markings. The zoom ring features markings as well. Both lenses offer dependable, repeatable focus and zoom control based on the markings on the lens. Click through for the video…
