Hello Anthony, Frank here. Just two quick comments –
1. I didn’t say that potential HDV buyers would be drawn to XDCAM EX instead. I said that *many* potential HDV buyers would be drawn to XDCAM EX instead. That means *some* of them, not *all* of them. :)
Even without knowing all of the costs involved (B&H lists the PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX camcorder for $7499, but we really don’t know precise U.S. prices for SxS PRO media yet), it’s obvious that XDCAM EX will be more costly than this new full-size HDV camcorder with interchangeable lens but the XDCAM EX choice will provide better audio quality (non-compressed LPCM versus lossy compressed MPEG-1 Layer II) and better video quality (1/2-inch lens and sensor system recording at 35 Mbps versus 1/3-inch lens and sensor system recording at 25 Mbps) at not *that great* an increase in price, assuming no need to archive original footage. Being more quality-driven than cost-driven, I find this attractive. Surely some others will as well, don’t you think?
As to media, two 16 GB SxS PRO cards will hold 100 minutes of footage, but can (and will) be reused. A single Standard size (large) Sony PHDV-276DM DigitalMaster tape holds 276 minutes of footage and costs about $36 each, but professionals generally don’t reuse tape.
2. XDCAM EX is 4:2:0 (just like HDV), not 4:2:2.

Just a small correction to your first statement. Technically XDCAM never stood for just Optical. XDCAM has always been the moniker attached to “tapeless” acquisition and playback product. I must admit because we came out with optical first so one would think that to be the case
The reason I know this is I am the VP of marketing for Sony in the US. If you have any questions happy to help out. Be on the lookout for the 2 new HDV camcorders coming in January 2008. We will probably show them in all their glory at DV expo west
I am interested to learn a bit more about these HVR-7ZU cameras as teh new HDV cameras are now called. are they a bit like the sony Z1’s that they can be switch from NTSC to PAL or 1080i/60 1080i/50 ?
