It is stressed each time that “40 minutes” is the maximum time one can record, but this is not true. If you buy a higher capacity SD card, you can of course record much longer. I just bought a 8GB SDHC card (approx. $90 now) which can hold 83 minutes of video. It won’t be long or there will be 16GB and 32GB SDHC cards as well.
“40 minutes on a 4 gig card” is repeatedly specified because, not only does the camcorder come with a 4 gig SD card, but the manual only charts run times using cards up to 4 gig.
Knowing that larger cards are imminent, it begs the question: Why didn’t Panasonic push the “pro” AG-HSC1U recording data rate to the maximum allowed by the AVCHD spec? As it is, the recording quality is no better than the consumer model that is currently half the cost.
Thank you for an excellent review. It is difficult to navigate through dizzying array of camera offerings by magazines that have a vested interest in not offending the manufacterer/advertiser. Reading real in-hand performance by someone with not only camera knowledge but an accessable writing style is a pleasure.
